MobileIron Adapts To The Changing Rules Of Enterprise Mobility

MobileIron recently unveiled Release 2.0 of their Virtual Smartphone Platform. While previously focused as a mobile device management tool for administrators, Release 2.0 also takes aim at the mobile users themselves, delivering a wealth of self-service tools. It also provides visibility to both the user and IT into how well the mobile device, as well as the networks it uses, are serving the user's remote needs.

MobileIron's Virtual Smartphone Platform consists of two components: a central appliance and mobile clients. In the back office, MobileIron is sold as either a physical or virtual appliance. The clients support nearly all of the major smartphone operating systems, including the iPhone, Windows Mobile, Symbian, Palm webOS and BlackBerry, with Android promised. The client application essentially collects a snapshot of the device and pushes it to the appliance. Based on the particular client operating system, the capture process can be handled in the background or on demand by the user, in the case of the iPhone.

The feature list of MobileIron Release 2.0 reflects the changing paradigms within the enterprise mobility landscape. Where once all devices accessing corporate data were doled out and controlled exclusively within the organization, the influx of consumer friendly devices has made many IT departments rethink the corporate-centric approach. Release 2.0 delivers new user-facing portals to the product. The first, MyPhone@Work, gives end-users a full view of their mobile device usage, effectively turning text message and call logs into a threaded, searchable history of all of the user's mobile communications. MobileIron's reporting can also show a user a social network graph of their usage, displaying who they communicate with the most. Along with MyPhone@Work, MobileIron now features what they refer to as the Enterprise App Store. Through this portal, administrators can compile a list of applications approved for corporate use and provide quick links for the end-user to find that application on vendors' own stores, developer websites, or hosted on the MobileIron platform itself.

Administrators will also be find a lot to like within MobileIron. The user self-service options will certainly lower support calls, but the new Event Center functionality will enable an automated, proactive approach to mobility costs.  Like the user portals, the Event Center also leverages the compiled usage, but instead uses it to drive actions, such as alerts. For example, user activity can be compared against the enterprise wireless plans, and the user can receive alerts when nearing their usage thresholds to prevent expensive overages. This can be applied to security issues as well, such as alerting IT when a SIM card has been swapped out of a device, providing an early identification of a lost or stolen phone. MobileIron also offers a selected wipe feature. Designed for user-owned mobile devices, a selective wipe can remove any trace of corporate data off of the device without removing the user's personal data and applications.

All of the additions to MobileIron highlight the changing tides in enterprise mobility. For many companies, the days of corporate issued, single platform mobile solutions are over. Today's environment is a mix of company and personally owned devices, running any number of operating systems and applications. Just like the enterprise, IT departments have to evolve to support these devices while maintaining the same levels of service and security, and the tools that manage these devices, like MobileIron, have to grow  to support new mobile paradigms.

MobileIron Intros Release 2.0 for Smartphones

You might say it's a one-two-three punch coming from MobileIron today. The company introduced Release 2.0 of its Virtual Smartphone Platform, giving more control to IT departments and employees who want to make the most productive use of their smartphones.

There are three parts to the new release: MyPhone@Work, Event Center and the Enterprise App Store.
MyPhone@Work gives workers a searchable history of their communications, similar to how one might look up an old e-mail. The Event Center is a customizable event engine to track and respond to potential security, cost or quality problems. For example, it can reduce roaming costs by capturing international roaming use as it happens and let employees know when they need to get on the proper roaming plan.

The Enterprise App Store component allows IT to customize the store and publish approved internal and external apps, noting whether they are supported and/or reimbursed.

As MobileIron CEO Bob Tinker explains it, smartphones are proliferating in the enterprise, a situation driven by employees, many of whom want to bring in their own devices. IT has less control than desired but still gets stuck with the accountability.

Under a model of what he calls "cooperative mobility," the management of smartphones gets shared more fairly between employees and their corporate IT departments. In the end, users want to do the right thing; the key is driving behavior. "It really is about self-governance with IT guidance," he says. 

"The same things people expect on their desktop ... a lot of that activity is moving to mobile," he says. At the same time, it's important to balance the information that IT needs with the privacy of the end user.

Release 2.0 will be available across all the operating systems that MobileIron supports, including BlackBerry, Windows, iPhones, Nokia Symbian and Palm webOS, with Android support coming next year. MobileIron adds platforms based on what its enterprise customers are asking for, Tinker says.

One of MobileIron's customers is Netgear, a global networking products company where mobility plays an important role in running the business. Generally, MobileIron's enterprise customers have more than 1,000 users.

Cloud Distribution sign strategic agreement with NetPilot Internet Security

MobileIron voted Best in Show

MobileIron won Best in Show at Under the Radar today!  Here's a link to the presentation we gave:  http://www.undertheradarblog.com/  I am really proud of the hard work the team has done to get us here.
It was an honor to be invited to Under the Radar.  There were some awesome mobile startups there and I learned a lot from watching what others were doing.

I thought these guys http://www.m-via.com/ were solving a fascinating challenge of money transfer from US to developing countries over the phone.  And these guys http://hopephones.org/ were collecting old phones and using them to provide better medical care in developing countries - that's impact.

Plus I met Greg Grunberg, who plays the mind-reading cop on Heroes and is both a really nice guy and a mobile entrepreneur (http://getyowza.com/).  A cool day.

Expand Networks Cited as a Leader by Independent Research Firm in Latest WAN Optimization Market Report

MobileIron Shows ROI for Enterprise Mobile

After 18 months in development, MobileIron's virtual smartphone platform is ready for the spotlight. It's one of the few startups that focuses solely on mobile technology for the enterprise, and with almost $9 million in venture funding, it is a serious play at giving IT a better handle on smartphones.


MobileIron is not an app development shop or something specific to single devices. It's a cross-platform tool for companies to get hard data on the use of smartphones by employees, creating a pipeline between enterprise IT behind the firewall and employees out on the job. By providing real insight into how mobile plays a part in business, MobileIron could transform how the enterprise views mobile.

How It Works

MobileIron has been in beta for more than a year, but today is their public launch. To date they've secured nearly $9 million in funding from the likes of Sequoia Capital, Northwest Venture Partners, Storm Ventures and Big Basin Partners. Basically, it creates a bi-directional link between employee smartphones (most of which are owned by employees themselves) and enterprise activity behind the firewall.
 
A small piece of software runs in the background of a mobile device, logging information on enterprise-related activity, all of which gets sent back to the Virtual Smartphone Platform at MobileIron. Privacy policies set exactly what is sent back to the platform and how. MobileIron then relays the information to an appliance behind the firewall, presenting IT with a window onto how smartphones are being used.

In addition to control over how enterprise applications are used on smartphones, MobileIron gives companies the opportunity to make smarter decisions about spending on smartphones. Real-time usage information such as dropped calls and roaming charges can help IT make qualitative decisions on choosing carriers.
