OpSource SLA Ensures Dependability in the Cloud

Taking a cue from legacy network providers, cloud infrastructure provider OpSource has launched an uptime guarantee to help reduce customer fears of reliability when working in the cloud.

The OpSource Cloud SLA offers users 100 percent network uptime, 100 percent server uptime, less than 1-millisecond latency between devices, and 30-minute support response time for emergency cases, all guaranteed. If in the event a customer experiences any downtime or latency issues, or has to wait longer than 30 minutes for support, the customer would receive a credit.

As more enterprises move their networks to the cloud, SLAs are becoming more important. OpSource’s SLA is not the first, but it points to a growing demand for reliability in the emerging space.

In fact, in a recent survey conducted of OpSource Cloud customers, 74 percent said that a 100 percent uptime SLA was extremely important in their purchase decision-making.

OpSource service providers can point to the OpSource Cloud SLA as a commitment that the applications they’re providing are guaranteed to be available when and where the end user needs access — and are as reliable as legacy dedicated services.

“OpSource Cloud has enjoyed great momentum, growing 44 percent per month since we introduced the public beta back in October,” said Treb Ryan, CEO of OpSource. “We’re proud to offer a product that is enterprise-class not only in features and functionality, but also in its service level agreement. Cloud users have to be confident in their cloud and our new SLA is intended to build that confidence.”

OpSource offers public and virtual private clouds. Users can pay by the hour or for what they use, depending on their preference, and the have access to community resources for sharing and collaboration, third-party add-ins and configurations, as well as a Web interface and complete set of APIs.

Enteprise security and compliance within the OpSource cloud includes customizable security for firewalls, user-level login/password and access controls, and SAS 70 audits.

NeoAccel Steers SSL VPNs into the Fast Lane - www ...

San Jose, CA-based NeoAccel today announced the newest version of its SSL VPN-Plus product meant to bring SSL VPNs into the same neighborhood as IPSec VPNs performance-wise.

Virtual private networks (VPNs) provide a vital service for many businesses by establishing a secure tunnel to networks from remote locations. IPSec-based VPNs are known for their reliability and speed but require IT intervention in the form of client software deployment and setup. As "first generation" VPN technology, IPSec-based products are shackled with "clients that were not developed for friendliness," says Frank Guerrero, NeoAccel's vice president of marketing.

SSL VPNs, on the other hand, are renowned for their ubiquity and low administrative overhead, but the chatty nature of the standard can slow transactions to a crawl. According to the company, this "second generation" represents both a step forward in terms of access and scalability but a step back in responsiveness as broadband connections proliferate.

NeoAccel bridges these two worlds with its SSL VPN-Plus gateway appliances.

Now up to version 3.0, the 1U SSL VPN-Plus comes in three models, the SGX-4800, SGX-2400, and SGX-1200. At the top of the product line, the SGX-4800 provides data exchange rates of up to 950 Mbps and support for up to 10,000 concurrent users. Down the ladder, the SGX-2400 and SGX-12000 support speeds of up to 500 Mbps and 250 Mbps, and concurrent user counts of 2,000 and 100, respectively.

All models are capable of 1,800 logins and 8,400 SSL transactions per second.

While the specs tell one story, the most obvious performance indicator is the noticeable decrease in transfer times, even by human standards. In tests, NeoAccel's appliances were able to transfer an 8.5 MB file in 23 seconds over a LAN, a 5-second penalty over native speeds but nearly 4 minutes faster than a traditional SSL VPN.

This is made possible by the company's Intelligent Connection Acceleration Architecture, a technology that allows the hardware to prevent "TCP over TCP meltdown," a condition exacerbated when "two connections are running out of sync," according to Guerrero. In typical SSL VPNs, the secure tunnel has to accommodate these two nested TCP connections, which in turn imposes a drag on transfer speeds as the end-user system is constantly engaged in maintaining the SSL connection.

Therefore, NeoAccel is making the case for replacing IPsec VPNs with the company's technology. Aside from a low IT maintenance profile - since there are no end-user clients to lord over - the product also makes it possible to extend NAC-like access policies to remote systems as well as fine grained network segmenting controls to keep users outside of the corporate firewall from reaching resources they shouldn't.

Moreover, the SSL-based products open a lifeline to all types of workers, including those with handhelds as well as laptop toters. Another side effect is that users of "all levels of sophistication can log into networks," extending secure communications to every type of employee, not just the tech savvy ones, says Guerrero.

Avianis Takes Off With OpSource Cloud

OpSource™, the leader in enterprise-class hosting and services, today announced that flight management company Avianis has saved 75 percent over traditional hosting costs and increased customer confidence by moving its application to OpSource Cloud, the first cloud computing solution to bring together the flexibility, availability and community of the public cloud with enterprise-class security, performance and control.

Not only was Avianis able to move its entire application to the Cloud in less than two weeks, with no re-architecting required but, by taking advantage of OpSource Cloud's 100 percent SLA and compliance features, the company has seen customer satisfaction immediately soar.

"We looked at numerous cloud solutions, including Amazon EC2 and Microsoft Azure, but there was a very large development effort needed to port to either of these. On the other hand, we could move to OpSource Cloud without making any code changes at all," said Daniel Tharp, President and CEO, Avianis. "We wanted a cloud that you could control all the way down to the OS, with a breadth of services like billing that we could deploy as we grow. OpSource Cloud has given us all of these features -- and, through its 100 percent SLA, it's bringing us the kind of always-on performance that has made our customers take notice."

Avianis is focused on the business aviation industry, managing the flight schedules, personnel regulatory records and the general operating logistics of corporate and privately owned aircraft. Avianis serves a wide range of flight operations, from charter, corporate, and fractional ownership setups to large government and military support operations. At any time, the Avianis system is controlling the schedules and data of hundreds of aircraft on every continent except Asia. Formerly known as Trindigo, the company's rebranding, also announced today, is part of a concerted effort to quickly grow its worldwide footprint -- and having a cloud infrastructure that could grow with its business was integral to Avianis' plans.

"Our service has been a great success and we are now at the point where we want to expand our business. Cloud computing gives us the infrastructure we need to grow rapidly but stably," Tharp continued. "And OpSource Cloud alone offered us the level of compliance and security that we needed to bring our business to the next level."

When dealing with aviation plans, security is an important issue. OpSource Cloud addresses this need by providing every customer with a private cloud within the public cloud, allowing Avianis tight control over its application's degree of Internet connectivity. OpSource Cloud also offers enterprise-quality controls, including user level login/password and operational permissions, all backed by a 100 percent SLA. This level of increased control means that Avianis can be sure that users can only access their own flight data, ensuring privacy and safety.

"The Avianis story is a great example of how moving to the cloud can not only save a company money but can enhance its performance and growth potential," said Treb Ryan, CEO, OpSource. "We look forward to helping Avianis expand its worldwide footprint while maintaining the great quality that has made its application such a success."

Panda discovers malware on HTC Magic phone

A Panda Security employee discovered three malware programs on a recently purchased HTC Magic phone when it was plugged it into a Windows computer.

Upon further investigation, Panda found that the employee’s phone contained three malware programs: a client for the now-defunct Mariposa botnet, the Conficker worm as well as a password stealer for the Lineage game, said Pedro Bustamante, Panda’s senior research adviser.

The malware programs were on the phone’s 8GB microSD memory card, which mounts as an external drive when plugged into a PC, Bustamante said. When plugged into a Windows PC, the Mariposa botnet client would automatically run, Bustamante said.

Mariposa was at one time one of the largest botnets responsible for denial-of-service attacks and stealing banking credentials until it was shut down by security researchers in December after they disabled its command-and-control servers. Spanish police have since arrested three men affiliated with the botnet.

Mariposa’s autorun configuration may have overwritten Conficker’s autorun capability, Bustamante said. Conficker is a worm that still infects millions of machines worldwide despite an aggressive campaign by security experts to eradicate it. The password-stealing program would not run automatically unless someone double clicked on the file, Bustamante said.

A Vodafone spokesman said the company is looking into the situation but that it appears to be an isolated incident. “We will obviously fully investigate this and make sure that any necessary changes to our security policies are put in place,” he said.

The HTC Magic phone has been on the market for more than a year, so it’s unlikely that the malware programs were installed at the factory. “It would have popped up earlier,” Bustamante said.

What is more likely is that the phone was purchased by someone else, the microSD card became infected after the phone was plugged into an infected PC, and then the phone returned to Vodafone.

“It was probably returned to Vodafone and sent to another person without flashing it or restoring the memory of the phone,” Bustamante.

Many phones can be reset to their factory settings by pushing a couple of buttons, which would have erased the malware and reset the phone, something that should be standard procedure before selling a refurbished phone, Bustamante said.

“The question is why wasn’t it done,” he said.

Vodafone is tracing the phone, which was ordered in Spain, to see which warehouse it came from, Bustamante said. Vodafone distributes the phone in the U.K., Spain, Germany and France, he said.

Panda, which has published a blog post with screenshots, also plans on purchase two or three more HTC Magics for investigation.

OpSource Cloud Customer Adoption Surges as Businesses Demand More From the Cloud

Customers of All Sizes and Geographies Choose OpSource Cloud for Its Enterprise-Class Performance, Security and Support

OpSource™, the leader in Cloud operations, today announced that OpSource Cloud™ has experienced an average growth rate of 44 percent per month since its public Beta launch in October, with customers representing everyone from small Internet shops to the new class of Cloud VARS. All customers, regardless of size, vertical or geography, have chosen OpSource Cloud because it alone offers them enterprise-class performance, security and support not only at a competitive price but with a 100 percent SLA.

"When one of our clients wanted to move to the cloud, we evaluated OpSource Cloud and Amazon EC2, among others," said Steve Laing, director of U.K.-based Country Computers. "We chose OpSource Cloud because of its ease of use and great controls. OpSource Cloud's pricing structure made choosing to sign-up a no-brainer. It cost us less to sign-up and test out the system than it would to do a traditional written evaluation. Plus, it took me only an evening to get the application up and running. OpSource Cloud is very intuitive for a system administrator -- everything is where you would expect it to be and there is no real learning curve."

Country Computers is a UK-based IT consultancy, specializing in implementation, support and training. In addition to its ease of use, Country Computers was drawn to OpSource Cloud for its great scalability. OpSource Cloud also offers users enterprise-quality controls, including user level login and passwords, operational permissions, all backed by a 100 percent SLA.

"We looked at several cloud platform as a service providers, but only OpSource Cloud lets you easily spin up servers with the highest level of security possible," said Simon Tin-Yul Kok, CSO and manager of IT/Hosting Operations, RewardStream. "Security and customer support are critical in our business -- if we've got a problem we need to know that someone is on it in real-time. With other vendors, you have to wait a long time for a response. With OpSource, our experience has been that someone is there to help you right away."

RewardStream, a leader in SaaS loyalty marketing programs, turned to OpSource Cloud for its ease of use and unparalled security, both important qualities when dealing with critical customer data. With OpSource Cloud, each customer receives a private network and sets the degree of public Internet connectivity they wish to grant, from totally private to fully available. OpSource Cloud also provides user customizable security with a compliant, high-performance, multi-tier Cloud architecture and full user control over firewall settings. In addition, OpSource Cloud offers 24x7 phone support and a rich online community to share and collaborate with peers as well as get third-party add-ins, images and configurations.

"Medium-sized businesses are where we are seeing the Cloud get entrenched first," said Patrick Spillane, solutions architect, Veris Technologies. "These companies are in an uncomfortable spot where they don't have $100,000 to spend on their infrastructure and they are also aren't ready to be totally hands-off. When we show these customers OpSource Cloud they get it right away. They appreciate that they can turn their servers on and off as they need them, and that they are getting everything from SAS 70 audit to 100 percent SLAs to APIs to 24x7 support. OpSource Cloud gives us and our customers the raw materials we need to build absolutely anything we can dream of. And we literally have gotten servers up and running in seconds. We've only scratched the surface of what we can do with OpSource Cloud."

Veris Technologies is focused on delivering cloud solutions to SMBs and is also building its own SaaS solution for the legal industry on OpSource Cloud. In addition to its unmatched features, Veris was drawn to OpSource Cloud for its aggressive pricing and for the ability to pay for only what you consume with no commitment, but with discounts for monthly programs. The company also found its online sign-up and fast provisioning a competitive edge when reselling OpSource Cloud to its customers since OpSource Cloud alone lets you create a new account in seconds, with servers up and running in just minutes.

"OpSource Cloud is seeing great traction with companies of all sizes and across multiple verticals, proving that enterprise-class features are absolutely essential to anyone moving to the cloud today," said Treb Ryan, CEO, OpSource. "Customers are demanding a lot out of the second generation cloud. We have listened to them and built a solution that meets all of their needs--and is helping change corporate computing as we know it today."

OpSource Cloud is the first cloud to bring together the flexibility, availability and community of the public cloud with the security, performance and control the enterprise demands.
